Teen Crashes Into Test Office While Taking Driving Exam

You know how sometimes it is fun to kick back and reminisce about all those mindless stunts you pulled in high school and think “Man, I am lucky to still be alive!”

I remember in high school trying to help my buddy Jason learn to drive. His parents were to afraid to let him behind the wheel and after one driving lesson with him in the local Taco Bell parking lot….I understood why.

Taco Bell crash
No actually us, but could have been…

Well apparently Jason has a 17-year-old relative in Buffalo Minnesota.

According to the Buffalo Minnesota police department, a teen had this SUV in drive while they meant to back out of the parking space. If that is the case, this teen must have slammed the accelerator pretty darn hard, based on the damage to the SUV and the building!

The 60-year-old woman administering the test was taken to Buffalo Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver’ was unhurt, but I am sure is the butt of a lot of jokes at school this week.

Parents: Make sure you practice driving with your teen before they take the driving exam! I suggest an empty parking lot with no glass and brick buildings or pedestrian sidewalks nearby.

The Pope (Temporarily) Upgrades to a Lamborghini Huracan!

His Holiness has been given a brand new striped V-10 Lamborghini Huracan LP580-2, donated by Lamborghini itself, to which he immediately slapped his John Hancock on.

Wonder if they attached a “Please Sign Here” Post-It.

So on top of getting the tax write-off, Lamborghini is also getting in good with ‘The Man Upstairs’ prior to the launch of their new SUV! Well played Lambo! Talk about a “2-For”!

The V-10 powered super car will not be replacing the famous Pope-mobile however. The autographed slice of automobile heaven will instead be auctioned off by RM Sotheby’s on May 12th, 2018. The proceeds of the sale will go towards various charitable causes to determined by His Holiness, such as assistance for human trafficking victims and building homes and churches in Iraq.

It remains to be seen if His Holiness will receive a similar endorsement deal from Sharpie as the one Terrell Owens got when he signed the football after a touchdown.

Land Rover Now Has A Stroller You MIGHT Be Able To Pay Off Before Your Child Is Walking

This is the perfect baby registry gift for that parent who loves to go on treacherous excursions to far off exotic lands (like Downtown Birmingham) for $8 cups of Starbucks coffee (usually while wearing their North Face jackets and Lululemon Yoga pants).

In an effort to show that brand licensing can be a lucrative revenue stream, the auto maker Jaguar Land Rover will be lending it’s luxurious name to iCandy for a new baby stroller…that will retail for over $2,000 (at current exchange rates).

land rover stroller

If you think that sounds a tad bit pricey for baby stroller, that is simply because it is. I believe we paid about a tenth of that for out City Mini by Baby Jogger.

But, in Land Rover’s defense, this new “push chair” features all-terrain “go-anywhere” capability, Land Rover design elements and is a “tribute to Land Rover’s breadth of capability.”

land rover stroller 2
Where does the chauffeur sit?

You might ask yourself exactly what that means.

I don’t have an answer for you, I am just pointing out that you may be asking yourself that.

I do want to point out that I am a defender of a free economy.  Just because I think it may be asinine to purchase a stroller that cost more than I spent on my first car (although this stroller probably runs better than that 1995 Ford Tempo ever did), doesn’t mean that it won’t be successful.

I believe market dictates price and if enough brand conscious consumers believe that dropping 2 grand on a non-self-propelled stroller will improve their quality of life, who am I to say they shouldn’t.

The new “iCandy Peach All-Terrain Special Edition pushchair for adventurous parents” will be launched at the Fankfurt Motor Show.

No word yet on leasing options or financing.

Land Rover used to license their name to a line of push chairs manufactured by Pegasus, but ceased that partnership back in 2002.

Remember when social media blew up about a concept Ford licensed baby crib that mimicked late evening drives?

Geeky Daddy & The G-Man Visit The Selfridge ANGB Open House & Air Show

What better way to spend a sunny summer Saturday than an air show?

Up, Up and Away!

This past weekend was the Open House and Air Show at the Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Harrison Township, MI. The massive, century old Michigan Air National Guard facility is one of the few joint reserve force bases to house Army Reserve, Army National Guard, Air Force Reserve, Navy Reserve, Marine Corp & Coast Guard units.

The open house is a fun way for people to learn about military aviation history, see and climb inside many of the active duty and historical military aircraft, meet (and thank) active and retired military personal or just watch (and hear) some amazing stunt flying!

“Because I was inverted.”

The Thunderbirds capped off the event with their usual death defying stunts!

The show a little bit of everything, from World War I aircraft to the latest F-35 Raptor!

Lots of ground vehicles as well.

Grayson tried to make off with a Humvee, but his feet couldn’t reach the pedals…

“Where’s the seat adjuster on this thing?”

He most enjoyed the 40 MM grenade launcher, which had Geeky Mommie a little concerned and the Marines laughing.

IMG_20170819_154950 (1)

He was not overly impressed with the Coast Guard rescue copter…

“You’ve got yourself a fairly nice helicopter, but I have a bottle.”

We checked out the Marines’ Osprey VTOL aircraft,

And Lil’ G became very concerned when I placed him down and made my way towards the cockpit

“Ummm…is daddy certified to drive this thing?!?”

The Monday Morning Meme Me With Grayson this week also came from this excursion!

On a serious note, I am so glad we brought Lil’ G-Man’s Baby Banz ear protection! It got pretty loud when the F-16’s and F/A-18’s flew over head and we were surprised to see how many kids were there without any ear protection at all. We originally got the Baby Banz for 4th of July fireworks but they have come in handy so many times since.

The Michigan State Police had an exhibit as well with a vintage 1957 Ford squad car, underwater recovery team equipment and riot gear.

“Wow! This car is oder than daddy! Is that even possible?”

“Alright daycare germs. I’m ready to combat you now!”

Lots of cool stuff!

All in all, it was a fun day!

New Corvette May Have 1500 HP…But Still No Room For A Car Seat.

The fact that General Motors’ next model Corvette will be mid-engine redesign is nothing new…but the idea that it may be able to perform the Kesel Run in less than 12 parsecs is!

Blue shirt: “Quick! Get the cover on before dad finds out we borrowed the car without permission!” Black Shirt: “Dude, we are so fired.”

Corvette Action Center is reporting that the mid-engine C8 Corvette has not only been green lit, but it sounds like new Vette will be gunning for the Ferrari/Lamborgini market.

Screen Shot 2017-08-18 at 11.57.04 AM Will the actual vehicle be released with 1500 HP? Very doubtful. But reportedly the design was revealed to GM engineers last week and the response was positive.

Car And Driver magazine has speculated that we would see mid-engine Vette as far back as late 2012, but the costly re-design of engineering such a change was pushed back do to government bail-outs, corporate re-structuring and so on.

Corvette Action Center recently caught pictures of what appears to be a mid-engine out for testing (or a Jimmy John’s run, we can’t be certain).

Before employees were able to conceal the vehicle, you can see that the new model appears to keep many of the same lines as the current C7 model Corvette.

Unfortunately, I still don’t see any room for a child’s car seat.

Guess I need to continue waiting for the “family truckster” Corvette model to debut…

A Fully Furnished 1989 FBI Surveillance Van Just Sold At Auction And It Is Just As Awesome As You’d Expect!

We have all seen those unmarked FBI surveillance vans, chuck full of VCR’s, tape recorders and hidden cameras, in movies like Donnie Brasco, American Gangster and Goodfellas.

goodfellas meme

And, like me, you have probably thought about how cool it would be to own one!

Heck, I’ve thought about it so much that the name on my home wi-fi is “FBISurveillanceVan1”. It really confuses friends whenever neighbors have contractors working on their houses!

Well, thanks to ebay, some lucky dude just became the proud owner of a fully functioning, near mint condition 1989 Dodge Ram FBI Surveillance van!

The FBI of the late 1980’s thought of everything that they may need on a long stakeout, from various recording devices to exterior cameras to a periscope port to heavy duty locks on the doors. Even a working toilet!

The North Carolina based seller claims that the van was used on official FBI surveillance and even still contains some recorded tapes inside! (Not sure how legal that is…)

The winning bid for the van came in a whopping $18,700 from a private buyer.

Justin Lin’s Reboot Of Knight Rider Is Getting Closer! What Car Would You Like To See As KITT?

Word of the Knight Rider reboot has been doing figure-8’s around cyber space for a while now with few details confirmed.

We know that Fast and Furious 3 – 6 and Star Trek Beyond director Justin Lin has partnered with digital network Machinima to produce the series remake and that the original Michael Knight himself, David Hasselhoff, will be on screen in some capacity.

A rare photo of Michael Knight using an early Apple Watch to order more hair product from Amazon Prime!

Just to recap Knight Rider for any Millennials that didn’t have the good fortune to be born in time to enjoy the 80’s, Knight Rider tells the story of a former police officer and Army Green Beret soldier who was shot in the head but saved by an elderly Montgomery Burns-ish billionaire and given a special Pontiac Trans Am named KITT, equipped with artificial intelligence and a cool looking steering wheel, to fight crime!

All while showing as much chest hair as possible.

How did someone come up with a show idea like that? There was a lot of cocaine in the 80’s!

Then unfortunately the 90’s came about and everything got all “X-Treme” and Team Knight Rider happened…

Like most fans of the original mid 80’s series, I have 2 burning questions about the reboot that I can’t wait to have answered:

  • What kind of car will Knight Rider be?

And, of course…

  • Will we needlessly see David Hasselhoff’s 64-year-old hairy chest?

Well at least we have an answer to the second question…YES!

hasselhoff shirtless
Taken while filming the reboot in California

While we still don’t know anything about the plot of the remake, or the second question:

What kind of car will Knight Rider be?

We know Justin Lin has a love for Nissan Skylines (who doesn’t?) and Dodge Challengers from his work on the Fast & Furious franchise.

skyline and challenger

So barring any kind of product placement deal with a car manufacturer, my money is on one of those two.

What car would you like to see made into a modern day KITT?

Geeky Daddy Movie Review Of Baby Driver

When I first heard about this film, I thought “Man, what a stupid title for a movie.”

After watching this rather entertaining movie, I left the theater understanding where the name of the movie came from, but I was still like “Man, what a stupid title for a movie.”

The best way I can describe this entertaining ride would be a Fast & Furious movie combined with a Fat Boy Slim music video: IF the Fast & Furious cast could actually act and the Fat Boy Slim video actually told a story.

The Story

The Professor (Kevin Spacey) puts together different crews for different heist, all using the same getaway driver: a young talented driver with Tinnitus (ringing in the ears). The only thing that keeps is ear ringing in check: A very diverse soundtrack!

The Players

This is the first movie I have ever seen Ansel Elgort in, since I have not seen the Divergent movies and somehow missed The Fault In Our Stars (by “somehow” I mean “I had no desire to”). Overall I was impressed by his performance.  He was very convincing as this quirky character and showed a wide range of emotions.

Kevin Spacey, Jamie Foxx and John Hamm all contributed with their usual outstanding performances as well. Especially Hamm, whose character was able to flip the switch from a likable buddy character to sociopath successfully. Many performers come off as over-acting trying to make that switch.

I would have liked to have seen more of Jon Bernthal in the film, seeing as how he was in every commercial I saw. His role was more a cameo and since it was towards the beginning of the film, I kept expecting to see him pop up again at some point.

The Good

The music used in the movie obviously played a huge role. Whether setting the mood for certain scenes or communicating emotions, the incredibly diverse soundtrack was perfectly selected and utilized.

The car chase stunts were also expertly choreographed to combine excitement with humor. It was nice to watch a car movie that did not come off as an obvious 2 hour commercial for a certain brand (cough…Fast & Furious..Dodge..cough).

The dialogue was smart and quick throughout leaving with the viewer with a soft spot for all the characters, even the serial killer ones.

It does leave you wondering how good Marvel’s Ant-Man could have been.

The Not-So-Good

I really enjoyed the story more so than the intermediate dance/music videos that Edgar Wright mixed in. While those scenes were entertaining, after a while I found them a little annoying and distracting from the well written plot.

I was not a huge fan of the ending either. Without giving too much away, I thought the film should have ended about 10 minutes earlier than it did.

The Result

In the end, I really enjoyed Baby Driver and am giving it a 4 out of 5 on the Geeky Daddy Movie Rating Scale and a Not Kid Friendly on the Geeky Daddy Sidekick Safe Scale.

Geeky Daddy Visits The EyesOn Design Car Show At The Edsel & Eleanor Ford House

On this Father’s Day, Geeky Daddy, Uncle Mike and Geeky Grandpa visited the EyesOn Design car show at the Edsel & Eleanor Ford House.

This year the show featured concept art by Syd Mead, who Geeky fans like myself know mostly as the concept artist for the movie Blade Runner.

There were a number of unique classics, as there usually is with this event.

There were some rare models from 1941 such as the Chrysler Thunderbolt and Chrysler Newport.

1954 Kaiser Darrin

This car from 1937 was crazy, but not as crazy as the controls on it’s dashboard!

Screen Shot 2017-06-18 at 10.39.01 PM

We saw a couple mint condition 1958 Ford Fairlane 500 Skyliner’s with working drop tops!

My favorites are always the muscle cars from the late 1960’s and 1970’s.

Also, the Bella Mangusta (designed in Italy in 1966) was a true international automobile, being designed with an American engine, English brakes, French steering and a German transaxle.

The EyesOn Design committee do a terrific job of bringing in fresh vehicles and themes every year and this year was no different.

What really caught me attention this year was the Powel Crosley collection. Crosley specialized in the production of small cars prior to World War II, then switched gears producing prototypes of small scale Jeeps, motorcycles and tracked vehicles.

Screen Shot 2017-06-18 at 11.10.02 PM
Crosley motorcycle with a bench back seat

Believe it or not, this prototype (that looked like a walking tracked lawn mower) is actually an early snowmobile. The soldier would ride behind on a sled.

This next prototype was a small munitions transport vehicle.

Not all the vehicles on display were antiques either, there was a Lykan on hand as well, which is Saudi Arabia’s new entry into the supercar market.
