The Top Teethers for Your Baby Geek

Lil’ G-Man still has no teeth, but he drools like Niagara and loves to put just about anything and everything in his mouth. Watch your fingers around this little guy! So we decided to save our knuckles and stock up on some epic teethers. Here are our top choices for geeky teethers.

Bumkins – DC Comics Silicon Teether Combo Pack – Superman & Batman

Screen Shot 2017-06-23 at 4.53.16 PM.png

Why have one superhero teether when you can have two? Bumkins really nails it with their superhero line-ups and the silicone makes it really easy to clean. For little girl geeks (or boys who think she’s awesome), they also have Wonder Woman, but not part of a set. Lil’ G has Batman because we purchased before we knew we could get in a two-pack.

Bumkins Nintendo Silicone Teether, Game Boy

Screen Shot 2017-06-23 at 4.59.38 PM

Did I mention how much I love Bumkins and how I think they’re super cool? They also show their geek love toward retro gaming with the Game Boy teether. You can also get a Nintendo NES remote, but the Game Boy is just too amazing not to get. And if Lil’ G ever gets interested in Game Boy, we still have a fully functioning system in black & white and everything!

Little Toader Teething Toys, Baconease Appe-Teethers

Screen Shot 2017-06-23 at 5.08.40 PM

Mmm…bacon. Not sure exactly how it happened but bacon has somehow made its place in geeky culture (much like the beloved Mountain Dew). This bacon-shaped teether is sure to get you plenty of looks when out in public. And love the name – Baconease, not to get confused with the condiment Baconnaise. (which is awesome)

MyBoo Autism/Sensory/Teething Chewable Dragon Pendant – Green

Screen Shot 2017-06-23 at 5.14.19 PM

While not quite as intimidating as Dany’s Drogon, all fantasy geeks need to have their own dragon chew toy. This dragon comes in a pendant format (with a safe, breakaway clash) so mommy or daddy can also look stylish. Ok, so maybe not stylish, but it’s better than a lot of teething necklaces on the market!

Fresh Baby So Easy First Teether, Green

Screen Shot 2017-06-23 at 5.20.03 PM

So while this teether isn’t technically a sword – it’s a SWORD! It has little nubbies on the top to soothe gums and feel like a baby toothbrush, and a guard so that your baby isn’t the next greatest sword swallower.

Sugarbooger Silicone Teether, Retro Robot, 2 Count

Screen Shot 2017-06-23 at 5.22.15 PM

So not exactly sure what a sugar booger is, or if I’d ever care to know (seriously – who approved that name for a company?), but these retro robots are pretty adorable. They feel very Mystery Science Theater 3000 to me, or even a little bit of Jetsons action. Just don’t think about boogers when you baby chews on these!

Nintendo Confirms SNES Classic Will Launch In September!

As Geeky Daddy reported last April, Nintendo will build upon the demand it saw for it’s NES Classic with a September launch of an SNES Classic!

Hopefully Nintendo will have the supply chain difficulties that they experienced with their NES Classic model resolved by the launch of this product, but based on the launch of their Switch system, I highly doubt it.

Geeky Daddy will keep you up-to-date on product availability. The unit is rumored to retail for $80 and will include two remotes and the following games:

  • Contra III: The Alien Wars (Never played this one, but feel like the original is so far superior)
  • Donkey Kong Country (Love this game – I spent hours playing this one back in the day!)
  • EarthBound
  • Final Fantasy III
  • F-ZERO
  • Kirby Super Star
  • Kirby’s Dream Course
  • The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (Same with Contra – the original was superior until the launch of the N64)
  • Mega Man X
  • Secret of Mana
  • Star Fox (OMG, OMG, OMG – YES!!!)
  • Star Fox 2 (OMG again – this was never originally released. Let’s hope it’s not a flop like other sequels tend to be)
  • Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting
  • Super Castlevania IV
  • Super Ghouls ’n Ghosts
  • Super Mario Kart (Always a classic)
  • Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
  • Super Mario World (I played this recently and forgot how hard it is – were we just better gamers when we were kids?)
  • Super Metroid
  • Super Punch-Out!!
  • Yoshi’s Island

I really would have hoped for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but at least StarFox is on the list!

No Really. The New Ken Doll Will Have a Man Bun (AKA Douche Knot) Option

Mattel unveiled their new updated Ken doll line to go along with last year’s updated Barbie line and variety was the order of the day!

The new Ken line up will come with 3 different body types: slim, original and broad (i.e. Dad bod).

“Hey ladies (& guys)!”

The variety goes beyond body builds as well. Skin tones, eye color and accessories, such as hipster style glasses, will also be customizable.

Hairstyle is another way to express individuality and Ken will be expressing his through multiple cuts, such as cornrows and man buns.

(At a previous job, I was actually sent to the H.R. office for referring to a co-worker’s “man bun” as a “douche knot”. If that person is reading this right now, I am sorry. Your douchie-ness is completely unrelated to your hair style choice. My bad.)

Mattel updated their Barbie line-up last year with a similar variety of options so this is a logical continuation of their new all-inclusive and diversified initiative. Could this be the first salvo in a new arms race between Mattel’s Barbie and American Girl Dolls?

I wrote previously this year how American Girl launched their first boy doll “Logan“, so it makes sense that Mattel needs to defend their market share. Especially since the toy market has been declining as children prefer to play with screens now and days as opposed to molded plastic.

Don’t confuse this “Logan” with the Wolverine “Logan”

Will this work? Who can say? Fortunately, Lil G is still at the stage where a fast food napkin will entertain him just as well the most expensive toy.

The new Ken dolls saw a limited release this week and will be mass released July 8th.

I still prefer Transformers toys myself.

The Top Ten Essentials For Every Man’s Tactical Diaper Bag

I wanted to quickly shout out a “Happy Father’s Day” to all the other daddies out there!

This is my first Father’s Day and the past 8 months have been one heck of a learning experience!

One of the first things I learned was to always be prepared by always having my diaper bag with me at all times (which is why you will see me wearing a ruck sack in most photos)!

“This is not the baby we are looking for. Move along, move along” (Thank you Ryan Adwers for the quote)

As most of you know, I am also a contributing author for Detroit City Mom’s Blog (the only “daddy” on the team) and recently wrote an article about the “Top Ten Essentials For Every Man’s Tactical Diaper Bag” because, as daddies, we have some different needs than mommies do.

Please review my list, enjoy my humor and comment with any essentials you think I may have missed.

But most of all, everyone enjoy the day!

G-Tested Product Review: Little Tikes 2-in-1 Snug n’ Secure Swing

Lil’ G-Man recently got the Little Tikes 2-in-1 Snug n’ Secure Swing to use on his swing set. Even better, while normally about $26, Amazon Prime members can get it for $17.23 at the time of this article! The swing comes in blue or pink (G got the blue) and takes about a minute to put together. No idea how they make money on this – it’s also made in the USA.

Screen Shot 2017-05-29 at 9.22.55 PM

It’s technically made for babies 9 months and older (up to 4 years/50 pounds), but we gave it a try a little early. The T-bar comes up to keep your baby secure and two shoulder straps further secure the swing. The fit seemed great for little G even though he’s on the smaller end (we tried it as early as 6.5 months and 17 pounds).

The T-Bar can be removed as he gets older and can secure himself, but we’ll have it in there for a while. The yellow rope straps connected perfectly with the attached s-shaped hook to our swing set. If you don’t have a set, you can buy tree hooks separately.

He seems to really love it – the higher the better! He also loves when I grab him and wait to release him to swing. It also swings on its own for a good minute without additional pushing (might be G swinging his little feet a bit).

Couple of quick tips though:

  1. The s-shaped hooks need to be facing opposite directions when you hang on your swing set or hook. If not, the swing won’t go straight.
  2. The shoulder straps hook is a bit tough to get undone. It did get better after the third or fourth time, but try it before securing your baby. Geeky Mommie and Geeky Grammy had a hard time getting it undone because of slightly longer nails. You have to push in and pull at the same time. I have nightmares of taking Lil’ G out on the swing without Geeky Daddy home and not being able to get him out! But luckily it loosened and I had no issues.

For less than $20, you seriously can’t go wrong with this. GeekyMommie highly recommends. Happy Swinging!

Lil’ G-Man’s First Cold & Geeky Daddy’s 1st Encounter with Fridababy’s NoseFrida

So Lil’ G-Man had his first day at daycare the other day.  He received a “great” on his report card and I was proud of my wife for not crying as we dropped him off for her first 8 hour stretch away from him.

And of course he came down with a cold the next day.  We know that all baby’s get sick at daycare. It is just part of being in a new environment with other little ones that drool over everything that they come into contact with.  I just did not think he would get sick after his very first friggin’ day!

I felt so bad for Lower Case G. Fortunately no fever, but all stuffed up, sneezing, coughing and making these sad little whimpery type sounds….

Grayson trying to sleep it off

Obviously, at only 4 months old, NyQuil, Allegra Decongestant and even Grandpa’s Cough Syrup are all options that are off the table. My wife told me that there is a magical product called a “NoseFrida” that “everybody swears by” that I should run out and get.

So, with 20% off coupon in hand, off to superstore Buy Buy Baby I went. (Quick Geeky Daddy Hack: Always keep a set of Buy Buy Baby coupons in the car as well as the diaper bag so you are always prepared.  If you are like me, then you get a new one in the mail like every 3rd day…)

I purchased the NoseFrida and a box of hygiene filters and sped back to the manor like the superhero I thought I was.  Once home, we unpackaged the product, grabbed our stuffed-up bundle of joy and my wife said “Are you going to suck the snot out or should I?”

With a dumbfounded look on my face, I responded, as composed and evenly as I could, “What the heck are you talking about!?!”

Once the shock wore off and I examined the package in my hand, I realized what I had gotten myself into.  The way the NoseFrida works is ingenious yet fairly simply at the same time.  Much like an invention Richard Dean Anderson would come up with on a Macgyver re-run.

NoseFrida by Fridababy

The tapered end of a plastic tube rest against the baby’s nostril and the opposite end has a bendable straw attached that the adult sucks on. A filter separates the two ends preventing any baby snot from finding it’s way into the adult’s mouth.

If you think the thought of this process sounds disgusting, that is simply because the thought of it is.

However, my little mini-me was uncomfortable and in distress so daddy needs to man up and be the best darn “snotsucker” I could be.  Neither Lil’ G-Man or myself enjoyed the process but the honest answer is….this product is a winner!

Literally within a few seconds we had both his nostrils clear!  He was breathing clearly for the next couple hours, much happier and able to latch and feed perfectly.  We did need to repeat the process about every 4 hours or so, but I was honestly extremely impressed with the results. You do want to do a shot of saline spray in each nostril and it is not easy. You do need to suck on the straw pretty hard.

It is very important to replace the hygiene filters with each use (the product is pre-packaged with 4).  You want to make sure that filter is working like the security of a high priced celebrity VIP club and not like the security working the TSA line at Metro Airport. (i.e. very porous)

My recommendation to you is don’t wait till your baby is sick to pick up a NoseFrida. It is an inexpensive remedy that is easy to store in a small medicine cabinet with no shelf life concerns to worry about.
