I Finally Got Around To Trying The Snickers Protein Shake. My Thoughts…

I recently got back into working out and forging a fitness routine. And by “recently”, I mean “in the past few hours.”

I used to routinely work out 3 times a week with high-intensity interval training workouts, Krav Maga self-defense classes and even the occasional MURPH challenge.

Myself, Lil’ G-Man and some of our MURPH friends from Krav Maga Detroit

However I have taken the past 6 months or so off due to a back injury and our second baby being born. (Unfortunately, I may have put on more weight in the recent pregnancy than my wife did.)

My workout routine of the past few months

My motivations for getting back into fitness are to lose the weight, increase my cardio so that I can keep up with the toddler and improve my health overall.

Another bit of inspiration was seeing this new beauty on the shelf at the convenience store!

Say WHAT!?!

So I just finished a mini-junior sized-Minnie-Mouse version of the MURPH workout (10 minute jog, 100 squats, 100 pushups & 20 pull ups, 10 minute jog…hey..I’m just getting back in the groove) and am about to slam my first Snickers Chocolate Lowfat Milk Shake!

And my initial thoughts are…..ehhh, it’s ok. I was underwhelmed. It did not taste as Snickers-y as I hoped.

It definitely has some Snickers-esque flavor to it, but mostly I just taste the over-powering caramel after taste. The caramel taste is strong, I mean really strong. And since I am not a huge caramel fan, it turns me off a little more than it might other people.

For comparison sake, my previous post workout cocktail was the Chocolate Premier Protein shake with a little bit of PB Fit Peanut Powder tossed in to give it more of a chocolate peanut butter cup taste.

What most shocked me about the Snickers Chocolate milkshake was the calorie and carbohydrate content.

Holy Diabetic Coma Batman! 270 calories and 42 grams of sugar! Wow!

For comparison sake, the Premier Protein is is 160 calories and 1 gram of sugar (before adding any peanut powder). NOTE: The Premier Protein is 11 fl. ozs as opposed to the Snickers 14 fl. ozs.

Premier Protein nutritional information

Granted the Snickers Chocolate milkshake is not directly marketed as a post work-out shake, but having the “14 G Protein per Bottle” in bold on the front of the bottle does imply that it is meant, or at least can be used, as a post work-out protein shake.

In the end, I assumed the Premier Protein was going to be the healthier of the two shakes. I didn’t purchase the Snickers Chocolate shake for the health benefits, I purchased it for a Snickers taste…which I felt the shake fell short of.

The Snickers Chocolate milkshake wasn’t bad, but between the super strong caramel aftertaste and the heavy sugar content, I’ll be sticking with my Premier Protein PB Fit peanut powder concoction.

Have you tried the Snickers Chocolate milkshake? If so, what did you think of it?

  1. Wow, I can’t believe how much sugar there is! I’ve eyeballed it a few times at the store and thought about grabbing it but now I probably won’t. Thanks for the review!

  2. I have never seen this yet, but of course, it’s not something I am looking for. The sugar is SHOCKING considering it must be marketed towards people who drink protein shakes. Wouldn’t that be people who care what’s going into their body?

Interesting indeed. I think I can happily skip this. 🙂

  3. Wow, that’s a lot of sugar! I was super interested in trying it, but I think I’ll stay away from that one! Also, I’ve never been able to do that many push-ups when I AM in shape, so that’s impressive!

  4. Oh geez. You know, I’m not into candy what-so-ever. I barely touch it and when I do I tend to gravitate more towards the fruity kind. However, I do eat fairly well and while I don’t visit the gym, I run on more than one occasion throughout the week. If I saw this shake in the store post-run, I would probably have given it a shot, but I’m so glad that I read this! Definitely not going to happen now! I think I’ll look into your protein shake. It sounds delicious and the bonus is that my local GNC is having a 70% off sale. 🙂

  6. That definitely seems like something I would try, because who doesn’t love Snickers? But a strong caramel aftertaste and lots of sugar kind of put me off. Thanks for the review!

  7. I do love caramel, so I’m sure I’d probably like it more than you did. However, probably not worth all the extra sugar! And congratulations on taking your first step to a new workout routine.

  8. The Snickers Chocolate milkshake seems more like a drink to indulge whenever you feel like drinking something yummy and sweet with some added proteins. Definitely the Premier Protein seems like the healthier choice. I still stick with water during and after the workout. I get my protein from some real food.

  9. The sugar content is always what gets you with protein bars or shakes! It is hard to find one that tastes good and doesn’t have a million grams of sugar!
