The Apocalypse has arrived! Taco Bell Experiencing Tortilla Shortage!!!

In a legit news story that falls somewhere between “Ironic” and “WTF?”, the fast food giant Taco Bell is facing a tortilla shortage!

While not confirming which restaurants, or even which regions are hit the hardest, Taco Bell‘s parent company YUM Brands, did confirm that the tortilla shortage is legitimate, severe enough to have an effect on profits and that they are “working diligently to replenish the supply.”

The tortilla is a staple item in many Mexican entrees and is used in several of Taco Bell‘s best selling items, including quesadillas and burritos. Until the inventory issues are resolved, Taco Bell is encouraging customers to order menu items that aren’t made with tortillas, like the Power Menu Bowl or (my favorite) Cheesy Gordita Crunch.

Make’s you hungry, don’t it?

Should we read anything into the fact that this shortage only affects Taco Bell? Such as selection of their vendors or possible cash flow concerns?

Taco Bell competitors Chipotle (CMG) and Qdoba both told CNN business that they don’t anticipate any inventory issues from their suppliers. What does this say about Taco Bell‘s vendors?

Last year in the UK, KFC, another YUM Brand, experienced a chicken shortage so severe it was forced to temporarily shut down hundreds of restaurants.

What do you think? Will Taco Bell’s tortilla shortage have an effect on your eating habits? Is this a sign of larger problems at Taco Bell or YUM Brands? Should I have made an off color joke somewhere in this article?

Let me know in the comments below…but I may not see it for a bit. I am on my why to Taco Bell right now to stock up.

P.S. Am I the only one that had no idea Taco Supreme flavored sunflower seeds existed? I don’t know why they exist, but they do.

  1. Wow! This Taco Bell tortilla shortage is so darn interesting. Last week we went to our favorite Mexican restaurant and they were out of their very popular restaurant chips. Customers were so disappointed. When asked about this, the manager said their corn tortilla vendor had a supply issue, but that things should be back to normal in another week or two!

  2. This is hilarious — the post but also the tortilla shortage. Thankfully this won’t have any impact in my go to Taco Bell order since I’m a definitely a Chalupa girl.

  3. Terrible for them, but their tortillas tasted like chemicals to me for some reason! Also — they removed the caramel apple empanadas from their menu which lands them on my shit list permanently lol
