Robert Pattinson Is Our New Batman & We Should Just Chill Out…For Now

Yes, Robert Pattinson will be donning the world’s most famous pointy-eared cowl in Matt Reeve’s upcoming The Batman movie and no, he was not my first choice for the role either.

Mine was Tom Ellis, star of FOX’s (now Netflix’s) criminally underrated Lucifer series.

But now that we have all had a few moments to digest the news, let’s take a breath and actually put some thought into this selection.

A quick review of Pattinson’s IMDB page shows that he has played many diverse roles over the course his career where he did not sparkle in the sunlight.

Full Disclosure: I have never seen any of the Twilight movies. If I am going to watch a vampire movie, it won’t be one about teenagers falling in love. It will be about Wesley Snipes hunting them down (while the IRS is hunting him down).

My point is before vilifying Pattinson all over social media, let’s play this out for a bit and see where this goes.

If we shut down every actor’s entire career after they portrayed a character that was saddled with horribly uninspired dialogue, we never would have heard from Liam Neeson, Ewan McGregor or Natalie Portman after 1999!

Side Note: No matter what George Lucas says, I will never subscribe to the idea that he wrote poor dialogue for the Star Wars prequels on purpose.

Imagine if social media where around when the casting of Michael “I am Batman” Keaton was announced as Bruce Wayne in Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman movie!

Now I am not saying Reeves = Burton, just give it some time for his vision to take shape before overacting.

Imagine if his vision turned into a Batman Beyond story with Pattinson as Terry McGinnis and Michael Keaton reprising his role as an aged Bruce Wayne!

Then if somehow Jack Nicholson could be convinced to reprise his role as the Joker as well! I’d buy an advance ticket to see that right now!

And as for the rumors flying around about Home Alone‘s Macaulay Culkin as the Joker, I have yet to see one reliable source report this as a serious thing. All I have seen are click bait predators like MovieWeb and CosmicBookNews running wild with the idea.

What do you think? Am I naive? Or is all this knee jerk reaction over Pattinson’s casting warranted?

  1. I never imagined Robert Pattinson as Batman, but I can see him fit the role. I would totally be interested to see Macaulay Culkin as the Joker for sure!

  2. Since Heath Ledger’s Joker, I NEVER am quick to judge actors/actresses capabilities when it comes to performing a role completely outside the box of their usual characters. I personally LOVED Ben Affleck as Batman and thought he was the BEST out of all the actors who portrayed the masked superhero, but maybe Pattinson can pull it off. We’ll have to wait and see

  6. OK I am SUCH a movie geek and this post makes me so happy! The Wesley Snipes/IRS comment had me laughing out loud. And I love the sentiment here. The knee jerk reaction is lamer than lame and if you truly love movies and the entertainment/fun of it all, I think you enjoy the idea of seeing someone new trying an old character on for size and seeing what happens. It’s all a ride, and I’m here for it! Also… I need like 75 more movie-related posts from you with all of the funny commentary, mmm kkk? Thanks!
