Heroic Ohio Man Plans To Live On Beer Alone For 40+ Days Of Lent

We all have our heroes and not all heroes wear capes…

Christians believe in giving up certain pleasures or vices for the 46 days of Lent in honor of the sacrifice made by Jesus.

And Army Veteran Del Hall of Fifty West Brewing Company has found one of the most creative ways to observe this festivity: By consuming nothing but beer for Lent!

He is talking nothing but liquid bread for breakfast, lunch and dinner!

“I’m going to have all styles of beer,” he said. “I am nervous. I’m very nervous about it. Like I said, I’ve only fasted for four days.”

While this may sound crazy to you…And me…And pretty much anyone else that is not an alcoholic, but Hall did not simply pull this idea out of the air.

He said he was inspired by monks in the 1600s, who would fast during the season with a bock beer diet.

“Being master brewers, they decided they would take a popular style of beer in Germany, bock beer, make it extra hearty and that would be their liquid bread, and that’s what they call it. So the monks in Bavaria, they would call doppelbock liquid bread and basically it would sustain them through the 46 days of Lent,” said Hall.

But if anyone’s liver can handle this challenge, it is Hall.

“I’m an Army veteran, so, you know, I was number one in my class in the Army. I’ve run a full marathon before, 26.2 miles. I’ve done, like, you know, big challenges, but this seems very daunting, so I’m just curious if I’m up to the challenge — if I’m gonna be able to do it or not,” said Hall.

No word on how long ago this marathon was…

All of us here on the Geeky Daddy Team wish Del Hall the best of health and luck on this historic journey.

  1. Wait, what?? That seems like a very scary choice. How does he hope to actually get to live just on beer? I would love to know if he succeeds with his plan.

  2. That’s quite a challenge for lent. I’m not a bear drinker – haven’t had it since my college days. I’d prefer to take a red wine challenge – preferably Cabernet!
