New Study Shows Pregnant Women Should Avoid Licorice

If you or your partner are expecting, be careful which junk food you binge on while binge watching your favorite shows.

A new study published by the American Journal of Epidemiology has shown that large amounts of licorice (or liquorice depending on where you are from) consumed during pregnancy could result in lower cognitive reasoning, decreased memory capacity and a higher risk of ADHD problems for the baby.  It also showed that puberty started earlier and advanced further in girls.

The main complications appear to be from the chemical Glycrrhizin, which is contained in licorice, and has been previously known to cause high blood pressure and shorter pregnancies in humans.

The Detroit Free Press has a further in depth article on the subject HERE.
